Something interesting happened these past few weeks as I’ve been preparing to perform my originals for the first time ever. I realized as I was practicing in front of friends and family that I’m getting this feeling of self-consciousness that I’ve never had to deal with before while performing. Usually I make it a point to be energetic and engaging with the audience, but for my originals, it doesn’t naturally come to me that way. I realized that what I’m struggling with is this: it’s the first time I’m not able to put on a “mask” while performing. Performing covers for me has been about getting into a mode and bringing energy no matter the circumstances of my internal state; like, bringing on “Performance Tomomi” to take over for me. But for this performance, I can’t hide behind anyone – it’s just the real, raw me. And that’s what I’m so scared about. Not a lot of people truly see who I am inside, and exposing that is terrifying. I’ve come to realize that so many artists must go through this same predicament. And at the core of it, it’s about dealing with that voice inside whose only goal is to bring you down. The only solution?“Eventually you’re gonna need to ignore that voice or tell it to shut up.” -my teacher At the end of the day, even if I connect with just one person out there, it’s all worth it. Because as artists, what we do is healing for others. Music is healing. If one person out there can resonate with what I have to say, then I’ve done my job. And more than anyone or anything, it’s for me. It helps me heal and process and work through those thoughts and emotions that I’m wrangling with inside. Every song written, every performance performed, is an opportunity to discover and rediscover and heal myself, again and again. So for future me and anyone out there: it IS all worth it. How to write a song, step 6: interpret the message; step 7: record a full version. (vid 5/5) Step 6: This is the FIRST step where you actually put your opinion into the creative process. What is the feeling or story that you have received, and are there lyrics that you could replace in order to convey that feeling more accurately? Is there a melody somewhere that can be smoother or catchier? Step 7: With what you’ve put together thus far, re-record the music and lyrics to put together a rough full version of the song.
